All parents and guardians who are interested in fostering community at TJ, and working on efforts to provide educational events and increase awareness of how to support students for good mental health, are welcome to attend the next PTSA Health & Wellness Committee Meeting on Monday, October 5, 1:30-3:00 pm. (email healthandwellnesschair@tjptsa.org if you would like the video link).
Also, stay tuned! The Mental Health Coalition will hold its first meeting soon as well. This group is run by SGA and the student wellness group Our Minds Matter, and includes administration, teachers, student services staff, as well as parents, to coordinate efforts on mental health at TJ.
TJ’s Fairfax County Public Schools Video Approval Committee is looking for one more parent volunteer, preferably Freshman and Sophomore parents, for serving on the committee alongside two TJ teachers and two other parents (thank you for volunteering).
Teachers request the committee to assess films that they propose to show in class if the films are not on a pre-approved list. The committee reviews the films and determines suitability for in-class viewing. Once films are approved they can be used by any teacher at TJ for any purpose.
If interested, please contact Victoria Fisher at vfisher@fcps.edu. Thank you.
There will be an FCPS town hall on Sept. 23 at 7pm. This article in The Patch provides the following info:
“A town hall about the proposed admissions policy changes will be held on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. It will be available live online, and comments can be submitted to tjcomments@fcps.edu or live during the town hall at 1-800-231-6359.”
Please read the proposal and provide your feedback on the plan to the school board and our elected officials. Links will be added shortly.
Among other changes, the proposal would eliminate the admissions test and replace it with a “merit lottery”. Here is a quick comparison slide from the FCPS presentation.
Please take a few minutes to read this proposal and if you have thoughts about it, please let the policy makers (listed below) know.
Please also let them know if you and your children have had positive or negative experiences at TJ. Listening to the school board members speak, it seems they have received only overwhelmingly negative comments about TJ from past students. Please add your voice and let them know about your TJ experience.
