2022-02-25 Join Us to Celebrate Black History Month at TJ!

Please join the TJ PTSA Diversity Committee at our after-school Celebration of Black History Month on Friday, February 25th! We need your help to make this event a success! How can you help?

TJHSST – PTSA Diversity Committee: A Celebration of African American Cooking (signupgenius.com)

Prepare a Dish: “THE SUNDAY TABLE” – A Celebration of African American Cooking

We are looking for volunteers to prepare traditional African American dishes or dishes that represent the culinary journey from African to American for our TJPTSA Black History Month celebration. To keep it simple, we have put together a tasting menu of “typical” foods you would find at a traditional southern African American Sunday Table. New to southern cooking, but want to give it a try? Please don’t hesitate to volunteer. There are recipes attached for each dish needed, and parent volunteers to contact if you have any questions. Thank you!

Help As an Event Volunteer

We need parents and students to act as “Event Volunteers”. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: serving food, supervising Art installations, helping with performances, etc. Some Event Volunteers will need to participate in a short pre-event rehearsal at the school on Thursday, 2/24 at 6:30pm. (Details to be provided)

Help Setting Up

We need adults to help receive donated food, and help set up tables the day of the event.

Help Cleaning Up

Just like it sounds…. We need help putting every back the way we found it.

Donate Money or Purchase a Needed Item

The TJ PTSA is funding this event, but not all needed items are known at this time. If you would like to “pitch in” to cover the cost of needed items, it would be greatly appreciated.

Open the SignUpGenius, review the available slots, and click on the sign-up button.

Thank you! Questions? Please contact Karen Monaco at karen.TJDiversity@gmail.com.

TJ PTSA General Membership Fee Survey

It has been brought to our attention by the VA PTA that our membership fees are one of the highest in the state, and are the highest in the surrounding area. This is a matter that we are looking into and would like community feedback. Please participate in the two-question survey regarding the PTSA General Membership Fee. Should we reduce the General Membership fee?

Some comparison data:

TJ PTSA Adult Membership $40

Langley PTSA Parent Membership $25

Westfield HS PTSA Adult Membership $20

Herndon HS PTSA Membership $10

In addition, the Diversity Committee promotes connections and community.

4. Family Engagement Committee: Increasing awareness of mental health and emotional well-being within the TJ community. Particularly, the Family Engagement Committee works to engage the TJ parent community in the school wide efforts focusing on student balance and wellness. TJ PTSA Climate Survey

In the spirit of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, we would like to ask parents of the TJ community questions directly from the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics about their experiences and concerns from the past academic year. The survey intends to measure the strengths of the TJ community-building effort, opportunities we should pursue, and concerns we should address so that we can build the optimum supportive environment for TJ students and families.
